Frequently Asked Questions
Wesleyan Covenant Association of Western North Carolina
What is the Wesleyan Covenant Association of Western North Carolina?
We are the regional expression of a global body the Wesleyan Covenant Association. The global WCA is, in its own words, “an association of individuals and congregations who share a common understanding of our Wesleyan doctrine and a desire to become a vibrant, faithful, growing 21st century church.” You can find out more about the global movement of the WCA at www.wesleyancovenant.org.
Why is the Wesleyan Covenant Association Of Western North Carolina?
For many years, several evangelical renewal groups have operated within the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. As the divisions in the denomination have sharpened and the need for clarity has increased, the differing groups merged under the WCA of WNC.
What distinguishes the WCA from others in the United Methodist family?
We hold high views regarding the divinity of Christ, the authority of Scripture, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the reality of both heaven and hell. In recent years, denominational division has centered on human sexuality and we in the WCA affirm what the denomination has long believed but rarely taught: God’s design for sex involves celibacy in singleness and faithfulness in heterosexual marriage. For that reason, the WCA does not believe the church should officiate at gay weddings, nor should the church ordained partnered homosexuals. We believe God’s design for sex is a beautiful expression of his love for the human race and his pursuit of the church.
What is the relationship between the WCA and this new “Global Methodist Church” I keep hearing about?
The WCA describes itself as a “mid-wife” helping to give birth to this next expression of theologically conservative, biblically faithful Wesleyan Methodists. We eagerly anticipate a resolution to United Methodist debates, the passage of the Protocol For Grace & Separation, and the establishment of a new denomination.
